World Drug Day 2024: Empowering Nigerian Youth for a Drug-Free Future

On July 4th, 2024, MOFADAA hosted a significant event in Ikare Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, to mark this year’s World Drug Day. With the theme, “Nigerian Youth and a Drug-Free Future: Why We Must Invest in Prevention,” the event aimed to address the high prevalence of drug abuse among teenagers and adolescents in Southwest Nigeria, a region grappling with a substantial burden of drug-related issues.

Addressing a Critical Issue

Southwest Nigeria has the highest prevalence rate of drug abuse in the country, with Ikare Akoko particularly affected. The event was strategically targeted to empower youth and teenagers with the knowledge and skills needed to resist the pressures and influences leading to drug abuse and addiction.

Distinguished Speakers and Their Impact

The event was graced by esteemed keynote speakers who shared their insights and expertise:

  • Mr. Akinola M A, Assistant Commander of Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
  • Captain Okubadejo, Commander of NDLEA Akoko, Nigerian Army

Their speeches emphasized the importance of preventive measures and the role of education in equipping young people with decision-making skills to avoid the pitfalls of drug abuse. They highlighted the theme of the day, focusing on the necessity of investing in prevention to secure a healthier future for Nigerian youth.
